Meet WUbot
Meet the newest member of the School of Engineering: WUbot!
WUbot, a NAO robot from SoftBank Robotics, recently joined the Widener community as the resident robot in the new robotics engineering undergraduate program.
Standing at roughly 2-feet tall, WUbot is a high-performing, bipedal robot with a human-like appearance. Equipped with an advanced programming system, WUbot can perform a number of tasks including talking, moving, and even dabbing on occasion.
WUbot was given its name following a social media contest where students, faculty, staff and alumni were asked to submit and vote on names. Ryan Matsumoto '21 and alum Sanchi Shah MBA '17, both submitted the winning name.
Check out the name announcement video below to see WUbot in action.
WUbot’s arrival coincided with the launch of the new and first-of-its-kind in the region robotics program. The program welcomed 37 freshmen who are passionate about the exciting and expanding robotics industry. WUbot will serve as an educational and research tool for students to gain hands-on experience and strengthen their understanding of robot science and technology.
“WUbot has been a fantastic addition to the School of Engineering,” said Sachin Patil, interim dean of the School of Engineering. “WUbot demonstrates the innovative technology and program design possibilities within the field of robotics. We are excited to have WUbot and the region’s first robotics undergraduate program here on campus!”
Despite being new to campus, WUbot has already made various appearances at events, including homecoming and Widener Day. The School of Engineering looks forward to showing the Widener community all of WUbot’s capabilities, so be sure to keep an eye out on campus for the newest member of the Pride.
